Daily Roadside Math

Daily Roadside Math

Walking around Vancouver today I noticed this stretched bicycle sign:

Why is it so distorted? Was it painted by a machine that accidentally accelerated shortening the bicycle at the top?

There must be a reason for this distortion. Probably something facilitating our perception. Similarly to the Ambulance sign painted with a horizontal flip on the ambulance truck to allow the sign be correctly read in a rear view mirror.

Lets see. Who is it for? A warning for approaching cars and bicycles that this road is bicycle only. They should be able to see it from 20-50 feet away. Lets check how the sign looks from such distance:

Just perfect!
What exactly is happening with this visual illusion?
The drawing of the bicycle is cleverly made to account for the perspective projection distortion in our eyes (and brain) and allows for the bicycle to be perceived clearly from the average height and far distance. Note how the bicycle wheels appear perfectly round on the second picture.

This is simplified demonstration of our eye perceiving bicycle wheel as perfectly round from a distance and as an oval from close up.

Now, how about an explanation to this signage?

Daily 5 in Full Motion Mini Lessons and Kicking Off Guided Reading!

Daily 5 in Full Motion Mini Lessons and Kicking Off Guided Reading!

Everyone, including myself,  is excited that we are in full Daily 5 routine and starting guided reading!  The plan was to start guided reading today, Tuesday, but our MAPs assessments took longer than planned.  No problem!  We will start sometime this week.  I am very proud of how hard the students are working through the different components of the Daily 5.  If you are not familiar with the Daily 5 and CAFE, please look below at previous post where they are explained.  Feel free to contact me as well if you have questions.

Our mini lessons during literacy the next few week will cover authors purpose, determining important information, and synonyms.

I mentioned last week that I would be sending home "At Home Reading" information.  Parents....I did not get that done last week with Dot Day but am planning to send that information by October 1st.  Look for that information soon!

I took these two great panoramic pictures of the students during the Daily 5 as well as writing when they were sharing their pieces with a partner.  Just wanted to share them.

Daily Coffee

Daily Coffee

Every day, literally every day, Baby Fix-It and I go out for morning coffee. We live next door to a Starbucks so its very hard to resist swinging by whenever the desire strikes. One part of this ritual is about starting my day with some delicious java. The other part is a bit bigger.

The baristas at our Starbucks saw me just about every day of my pregnancy, noticed when my order changed (to reduce caffeine consumption), and then met baby Fix-It when we rolled in at 4 days old. They know us by name, they know our order, and they have literally watched my baby boy grow up this past year.

We have also made friends with other moms and kids who have a similar routine. Theres a big patio outside and I joke that baby Fix-It thinks its our yard and the customers have come to visit him.

For me, its a start to the day. We get dressed. We breathe some fresh air. We are greeted by friendly faces. We fill our tummies. Its like a daily cup of mental health.

Dangerous E Coli Bacteria in Krishna River Andhra news daily

Lakhs of people might be waiting for so long to take a holy dip during the Krishna Pushkarams which start from August 12th, 2016. State Government is expecting 1.20 crore people to visit Pushkar Ghats during the 12 Days. One an average, 10 lakh people will take the holy dip.

Caution: Dangerous E-Coli Bacteria has been found in the Krishna River. Especially, Seethanagaram Ghat in Guntur is where the bacteria is at a high level. Wastes from Paper Industries & Colonies were the major reason behind the alarming ratio of E-Coli Bacteria. This was revealed during the study by a Team of 30 Doctors.

Experts warn that there is every chance of Skin Allergies if taken a dip in the Krishna Water. Drinking such water will lead to Diarrhea, Typhoid, Motions and Chicken Pox. Even people might face Kidney and Breathing Issues.

Government Machinery should take measures to protect people from the E-Coli Bacteria. Diversion of people to the Ghats where the E-Coli Bacteria isnt severe is one of the preventive measures. Chlorination should be done at the ghats after every hour, maintaining cleanliness, ban on soaps, shampoos and polythene covers.

Daily 3 for Math!

Daily 3 for Math!

Hard to believe that the first quarter of school is half over!  Time is flying by so quickly!  The students are in a great routine, have been using and showing Cadet Pride throughout the building, and we are off to a great start to the school year.

In math we are working through the first unit focusing on patterns in number grids, telling time, determining differences, and calculator routines.  This year, I am setting up the structure of math time similar to the Daily 5 in literacy but students are selecting activities through the Daily 3.  The set up is something like this:
1. Begin together as large class to review a concept or introduce a new concept.
2.  Students select from "Math by Myself", "Math with Someone" or "Math Technology" while the teacher works with small groups focusing on skill or math strategy.  The activities in each of the three choices above have been selected and modeled to the students to build on math skills we are currently focusing on or to enrich the curriculum.
3.  Gather back together as large group to have guided practice with new skill or math strategy.
4.  Students select new choice activity from those mentioned above (can not be the same as first selection) while teacher works with different small group of students.
5.  Gather back together as large group to reinforce, practice, and question focused skill or strategy.
6.  If time, have a final choice in activities above (usually we do not get to this stop and wrap it up after step 5)

The three choices throughout the math period between instruction or when not with teacher are:
Math By Myself
Math with Someone
Math Technology

This is new to how math was usually taught and I have to say, I love it!  I feel I can focus more on individual students strengths and weaknesses while moving through the necessary curriculum for math.  The students also are more engaged in this format due to having some "choice" in their activities.

Daily Skincare with Kneipp

Daily Skincare with Kneipp

Thanks Kneipp for sponsoring this post!
Ever since I turned 25, my skin has been a bit... different. Just like clockwork it went from "pretty good" to "what the heck is happening?" Ive been looking for a new routine so I was absolutely thrilled when Kneipp (pronounced ken-IPE) invited me to their new store in King of Prussia-- the first in the US-- to try out some products. When I heard that everything in the store was made of plant-based ingredients, I was sold.
Sebastian Kneipp, the brands mastermind, was an incredibly interesting person. Hes called the Water Doctor and often referred to as one of the forefathers of the neuropathic movement. His philosophy is still the driving force behind the brand and consists of five pillars: water, plants, exercise, nutrition, and balance. They say "nature is the best pharmacy," and that increasing general well-being can prevent disease.
Ive been trying out quite a few of their products but what Ive loved most is the Almond Blossom skincare line. I highly recommend checking it out so Im going to share my new nightly routine with you:

First things first, I start out with the Cleansing Milk. (By the way, theres no actual milk in it, all of the products are vegan!) You simply have to apply cleanser to skin then wipe off with a moist face towel. I love this cleanser because its not harsh and doesnt dry out my skin but doesnt make it oily either. (I have combination skin-- an oily t-zone and generally dry everywhere else.)

Next up is the Face Tonic. This step will make sure your skin is refreshed and will also remove whatevers left of the cleanser. It really evens out my complexion as well, which is obviously a huge plus.

Next, its time to moisturize. Before bed, I like to use the Face Cream and in the morning before putting on my makeup, I use the Light-Weight Face Lotion. With either, all you need is a little bit. Apply as you would with any other moisturizer.

To finish it off, lightly apply the Night Cream to make your skin feel perfect come morning.

I know its a lot of steps but this is kind of a miracle routine. My skin feels just as good in the morning as it does right before I go to bed. Its definitely worth the extra ten minutes in the evening!

Bonus step: who doesnt love a good face mask? The helpful folks at the Kneipp store told me to use this one once a week or so. Ive only tried it once but it made my skin feel perfect all day long.

If youre local, be sure to check out Kneipps brand new store in King of Prussia.

xo,
e.m.
